Ireland's fastest man Paul Hession has progressed into the quarter-finals of the 200m after an excellent performance in his heat on Monday. Hession posted a time of 20.59. The 25-year-old from Athenry was comfortable throughout, running on the inside lane behind Spearmon, and coasted into the finish, suggesting there is better still to come from Hession in the next round which takes place at 1.05pm Irish time today.

Irish hammer thrower Eileen O'Keefe has failed in her bid to qualify for the final of the Olympic competition. O'Keefe was disappointing in her opening two rounds but sent her third throw beyond the 67 metre mark. In the end, the Kilkenny woman was just over one metre short of qualifying for the final stage of the competition. The Irish record holder was carrying an injury going into the games, which is the likely reason that she failed to reach the qualifying standard that was well short of her personal best.

In show jumping, Tipperary born Denis Lynch is in action again today at is making an excellent bid so far to take a place in Thursday’s final with 10 year old gelding Lantinus.
