A 20 year old man is currently being detained at Ronanstown Garda Station under Section 2 of the Drug Trafficking Act.

He was arrested at approximately 10.00am this morning - 19th August 2008 - following the planned search of a house in St Mark's Grove, Clondalkin, Dublin yesterday shortly after 9.00pm.

In the course of the search Gardai recovered approximately 1Kg of Heroin with an estimated street value of Two hundred thousand Euro.

Pat Grogan of the local branch of The Carer's Association, spoke on Radio Kilkenny's disability show, Managing Differences last night. He urged that any carer's in the Kilkenny area should come forward and avail of the service

Nominations are now being accepted for the Carer of the Year awards. Closing date is September the 5th.

 

 

 

 

180 holidaymakers bound for Cork have been stranded in France after their flight from Reus in Spain was diverted to Paris.

Their Budget Travel charter flight had been due to depart Spain at 2.30pm yesterday.

 

However after eventually boarding just after 10pm last night, the flight was diverted to Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris because of problems with the plane.

 

The holidaymakers are now due into Cork shortly before 5pm this evening.

 

Budget Travel have issued a statement apologising for any inconvenience experienced by the holidaymakers and Kilkenny people are advised to get in touch with budget travel if they need further information.


 

NATO foreign ministers meet in Brussels later today to discuss the crisis in Georgia.

A senior US official said the US would call on NATO members to consider suspending ministerial meetings with Moscow to press Russia to respect the peace deal on Georgia.

Reports say Russian troops and tanks are still deployed in several areas of the country, despite assertions that the withdrawal had begun.


However, Russian and Georgian forces have reportedly exchanged prisoners in a gesture of good will


Kilkenny county council have issused the following advice to local inhabitants:

Due to the flooding at Water Sources, consumers are advised as a precautionary measure to boil water in the following locations:


Bennettsbridge, Danesfort, Stoneyford, Kilmoganny, the Kells Area, Dunnamaggin, Paulstown, Goran, Goresbridge and the Ballyraggett Area

 

This is a precautionary notice. Kilkenny County Council are carrying out tests to the water supply and customers will be further notified as test results become available.”


More than 200 asylum seekers have gone on hunger strike in protest at what they say is bullying and lack of facilities at an accommodation centre in the midlands.

Over 70 families are involved in the action at the centre in Emo, Co Laois.

First with Olympic News:


Irish Boxers Kenny Egan and Paddy Barnes have both secured bronze medals in Beijing earlier today.

 

Barnes won bronze with a scoreline of 11-5, in the Light Fly Weight Quarter Final

 

Meanwhile in the Light Heavy Weight quarter final, Kenny Egan cruised to victory beating his Brazilian opponant Washington Silva 8-0.

 

Both boxers will continue to compete in an effort to secure Gold medals.

 

In athletics, Paul Hession has failed to qualify for the 200 metres final. Hession finished fifth on a time of 20.38seconds behind the winner who recorded a time of 20.11 seconds.



In the sailing Peter O'Leary & Stephen Milne were not in action in the Star class as conditions dictated that their races were not able to go ahead today.

The duo were to compete in two races but they have now been rescheduled for tomorrow, in addition to the final race. Currently the Irish Star sailors are 14th overall.




FIFA have confirmed that the Republic of Ireland's World Cup qualifier against Georgia on September 6 is to be switched to a neutral venue owing to security concerns in the wake of recent events in Georgia. The football's world governing body has taken the decision in the wake of the recent hostilities between Georgia and Russia over control of South Ossetia.

This evening kilkenny people can expect a little patchy drizzle, but otherwise dry apart from well scattered showers. It will brighten up in the evening. Highs of 19 degrees are to be expected, and there is a moderate westerly wind.

In eye witness traffic, we have reports that a stop go operation is in place on the Carlow Road at O'Loughlins turn, there is a stop go system in operation at the Hebron Road and the O'Loughlin road is closed to all traffic, diversions are in place there.
